Recently on The Perth Pinup Community group one of our beautiful member’s shared a rather decadent clip, “Here’s to the Girls” from the film Ziegfeld Follies (1945), while I had viewed this many times before, and other clips, but I’d never actually watched the film in it’s entirety! I decided today was today, and boy was it fabulous!
This wonderful vintage film starts in heaven, where the late and great Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr, is remembering all the beautiful shows he’d created, and imagines creating one last follies show! He dreams of all the talented people of his time, and those who have come since and his dreams become a beautiful show consisting of glamorous girls parading in all Ziegfeld glory, marvellous dance numbers and comedic skits. The star studded cast includes Lucille Ball, Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Fanny Brice, Judy Garland, and so many others! The number “Here’s to the Girls” even features some of the original dancers from the broadway show!
Ziegfeld Follies was an elaborate stage production that took place between 1907 and 1931 which was put together by the amazing Florenz Ziegfeld Jr. These were truly extravagant shows with attention to detail in all element of the theatre, from costume to movement.
This film glitters of all that was glamorous in our favourite vintage eras, and it’s purpose is to dazzle and entertain. If this is what you’re after this film is perfect for you! If you’re looking for a plot, and lots of story maybe save this film for another day, as it really is about the beauty, and talent that these performers have. While the depth of this movie is not in the complexity of story, there is so much to each performance.
If you’re a performer, or a vintage lover this film is so truly inspiring, I can’t recommend enough that you watch this! It will have you feeling so motivated and wanting to create beautiful things! As an artist looking at the past can give you so much inspiration to what you can create, many modern fashion designers visit vintage clothing stores to draw the new from old!
Watching vintage movies is one of my favourite things to do when I have a little down time, it’s just fabulous to put on your favourite vintage robe, cuddle up on the couch with your fur baby and enjoy something beautiful, treat yourself to a relaxing rest.
